CHÉNAS

Terres de Granites
This cru varies substantially from east to west.
In the west are very steep, high granite hills.
In the east, ancient alluvial soils with pebble deposits give rise to gentler slopes.
Soil from granite is found in almost equal amounts as soil from ancient piedmont deposits.

HISTORY :

According to the legend, Chénas was once covered by a huge oak forest which was replaced by the vine, the lumberjacks who worked there having realized that the granite soil was suitable for its cultivation. Located between Moulin à Vent to the south, Juliénas and Saint-Amour to the north, it is the «rarest» of the 10 Beaujolais crus because of the small size of its vineyard.

VINIFICATION :

Manual harvest of Gamay Noir with white juice.
Vatting by gravity, in concrete tanks. Maceration in whole grapes for about ten days, including pumping over and delestage, before pressing, to extract the maximum structure and color. The wine is then aged on fine lees in vats.

WINE :

Colour: Ruby with purple reflections.

Nose: Floral aromas of spicy violets.

Palate: Well-balanced wine in which we find the perfumes of violet and liquorice.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS :

Chénas is best appreciated when young, but it may be laid down for 3 to 5 years. It is the perfect accompaniment to game, poultry, white meats and white and soft cheeses. Serve at between 15 to 16°C.
